Nellore is set to witness a landmark educational initiative on 27 July, with the distribution of 7,000 bicycles to students studying in government schools, making it the largest single-day bicycle distribution programme in Andhra Pradesh’s history.
The programme will benefit students of Classes 8, 9, and 10 from 23 government high schools across the Nellore Urban and Rural constituencies. By improving access to transportation, the initiative aims to make students’ daily commute to school easier, encourage regular attendance, and support better learning outcomes.
The bicycles have been made possible through a contribution of nearly ₹6 crore from the personal earnings of Minister Ponguru Narayana’s daughters, Sharini and Sindhu, along with their spouses. The initiative reflects the family’s shared commitment to supporting public education and creating opportunities for young learners.
As part of a broader vision, an additional 3,000 bicycles are proposed to be provided to students entering Class 8 in the coming academic year, taking the total outreach to 10,000 students.
The initiative is expected to reduce transportation-related barriers, strengthen educational access and contribute to lowering school dropout rates, particularly in rural areas. It also complements the ongoing efforts being undertaken to enhance government school infrastructure and promote quality education across Nellore.
